GAO Found Many Ephedra Side Effects Were
Despite Following Instructions

Companies have claimed that people improperly used ephedra, which is
why death and other ephedra side effects have resulted. According to
Metabolife International, the company now under federal investigation
for withholding reports of consumer Metabolife side effects, the Metabolife
labeling goes to “great lengths to inform our customers about
the proper use of our products.” Scientists refute this claim,
and the General Accounting Office (GAO) looked into the reported ephedra
problems and found many people had followed ephedra product instructions
yet experienced adverse events.
Metabolife has received reports of heart attacks, strokes,
and seizures, as well as death. GAO director of health care public health
and sciences issues has said that the Metabolife side effects are “consistent
with the types of adverse events reported to FDA and with the documented
physiological effects of ephedra,” (cheboygannews.com, 7/24/03).
